So, to celebrate the fact I am now the owner of my very own garden and in an attempt to get my crafting I signed up for a Gardening Swap but now really have no idea what I should craft. Any suggestions?

My partner is not in the UK so bang goes including any seeds or cuttings in my package due to their import restrictions, therefore I’m hoping my handmade items will make up for the lack of variety. Please send your gardening craft ideas my way as time is running out. Thanks folks!

    Come on in…

    Our front door

I’m keen to try and keep all my house posts separate from my crafty ones but, until I get A Home For All Seasons up and running, She’s Crafty will have to do.

This is a picture of our front door!

We went out for our first full day of gutting and cleaning yesterday and, while the weather was unusually gorgeous for April in Glasgow, we didn’t spend much time in the garden and instead set about the house. I took a little time out to take some pictures of the front and hall to whet your appetite as well as some of the great patterns and packaging we unearthed – all of which are now up on Flickr.

    I got the key… I got the secret….

    The Key!

So, I am now able to spill the beans. The above key belongs to something I never thought I’d be able to own and never thought I would find (well, at least not again). It’s special, oh so special!

I mean, will you check that badboy out for a start? Have you ever seen such a beast of a key? (I specifically photographed it in my hand to give you a sense of scale). So, what’s it the key to? …… It’s the key to an amazing house!

Yup, as if the stress of getting married wasn’t enough, 2 weeks before the wedding we went to view a house. Now, as you all know, we’re currently a single income household and are in no position to move, so we were essentially playing with our emotions and stress levels – but it really was at a price and location too good to ignore.

Then we saw it. It may have been built in 1863, but it’s also not been touched inside for about 50+ years. My dreams of what we are now calling ‘doing an Allsopp’ were in overdrive but it just wasn’t practical. Heart, head, and, more than anything, pride went into battle and I swallowed the latter and called in the financial troops and a number of investments and set out to try and get it (it was fixed price and therefore a race).

We had to try and put all thoughts of it to the back of our minds while we got on with the wedding and then the honeymoon, but I also knew we had to because I’d been in this position before when, about 3 years ago, I had an offer accepted on an amazing house only for it to be dropped a week later. So, with my emotions as in check as I could get them having seen the treasure trove of original features in there, I tried to do my best not to think about it all until I knew for sure it was ours.

We picked up the keys on Friday and dashed out to see it as soon as we got in from the airport. I’ll confess I got a dose of the wobbles when a closer inspection showed the mountain of work that needs done before we can even think about moving in – hopefully for Christmas (?) though. But what really stunned us was how much the previous owner left behind. His story is a real tear-jerker and we actually met him on Friday while we were there.

We tried so hard to convey to him our gratitude and reassure him how much we would look after this place and not bastardise it. Still, we felt a little guilty running around oohing and ahhhing over the things like an old wall clock or a fabulous art deco sideboard that he’d left behind.

So, out of the frying pan and into the fire. A mere couple of hours after getting back from the honeymoon I’ve now saddled myself with the ultimate crafty project. It ties in nicely however with ‘A Home For All Seasons’. What is that I hear you cry? Well, AHFAS, is the name of another site I’ve owned for a while (make that years) which will be home (no pun intended) to my handmade homewares and now also to my blog on renovating Casa Crafty. I’ll write about all the great things I’ve found or made and include plenty of before and after shots.

I haven’t had the chance to take any proper pics yet but here is a tiny sneak peak of one of the many great ceilings/lights.

    Nesting

    Fabric Nests

As I mentioned in my previous post, I included one of my fabric nests in my owl swap and, as it was the only one I had, I thought I should get back into them. Personally I much prefer my leather and wool nests (kindly modelled by an owl here) but I need to wait on new wires to make more of those, so decided to get on with the more ’shabby chic’ fabric ones. I made these 2 on Wednesday and another one (white with black flowers) yesterday afternoon. They’re still a work in progress but I think the random sizing and look is what’s so nice about them (nests aren’t uniform!) and I’ve also been making some small clay eggs to go with them (though they’re also great for keys, coins, earrings, paper clips) so at least I’ve been keeping busy while resting.

    My new friend

    Fabric Owl Close up

This little cutie is my new friend and latest creation. I have been feeling down in the dumps despite being signed off work for the week to try and shift this damn pleurisy as, while a week off sounds bliss, it’s not quite so magic when you can’t do things like go round the shops, take a walk etc. So, stuck indoors for 7 days means I truly have no excuse not to get on with some crafting (between naps and biscuit munching of course).

The first thing on my list was to make an owl for Apryl’s Owl Swap over at Meridian Ariel. I had already picked up a trio of ceramic owls and a cute little vanity pouch but I needed to include something handmade so had a hunt for a basic owl tutorial. I hit a winner with the Abraham Owl pattern at Lolly Chops and set to it.

I used an old pair of cords and an old sweater that were sitting in my ‘must use one day’ pile and must say I really love the colour combo, especially with the chunky blue squircle button eyes. I’m a bit annoyed I didn’t get round to giving him any feet but his lovely fat belly keep him upright just fine. For more piccies of him basking in the sun of this week you can see him on my flickr.

I also added a little owl doodle I did (see below) and one of my fabric nests (more in next post).

    Drawing a blank..

Hi there followers old and new. I’m putting up a post because regardless of everyone’s warning about how hectic things were going to get re work/crafting/wedding I didn’t realise quite how overwhelming it would get.

I’m snowed under (though not with real snow unfortunately – not seen one flake this winter) but wanted to update to get the ball rolling again.

First off – Happy New Year! My mind boggles at all that 2009 already promises to bring… a marriage, an amazing adventure/trip, (hopefully) a new job, friends having babies, getting into my crafting on a serious level (post-nuptials of course) and so much more.

There’s lots I want to write about but not sure I have the time so will revert to a list and hopefully elaborate on it when I get a chance.

    THE BAD:

    - The week before Xmas I was struck down with some kind of vomitting bug, which was then followed by a chest infection, which has now turned into some kind of snot-based lurgy. 4 weeks of illness is too much.

    - I hit a brick wall on the enthusiasm/energy front (most likely due to the illness above) halfway through the wedding invite making and now they all need to be finished and printed and out the door in the next couple of weeks.

    - Royal Mail have lost 2 of my parcels over Xmas, one of which was a backpack I won in a competition which would have been great for running/travelling.

    - I have put on about half a stone and about 3″ round my waist and as a result can’t get into my wedding dress!! May have to try the ‘magic knickers’ approach as thus far my willpower can’t handle a diet.

    THE GOOD:

    - I have finally found a use for my GIANT stockpile of leather offcuts and am now a nest machine.Handmade Leather Nest

    - I have joined  Meridian Ariel’s Owl Swap. How I will find time for it I don’t know!

    - I have been researching (and subsequently spending a small fortune) accomodation, transport and trips for on our honeymoon.

    - I got a lovely letter from my penpal at the Letter Writers Alliance and a wonderful surprise in the form of a beautiful bird ornament from Edward & Lilly as part of her Pay It Forward.

    - Him Indoors did well on the gift front at Xmas and as such I got a ton of great supplies for the craft room.

    - I got an interview for that job I rrreeeeeaallllllly want, it’s tomorrow morning *gulp*

    Work In Progress

It seems the phrase work in progress applies to so many of my ideas and areas of my life. Hell, I even have a painting with that title! Unfortunately my brain seems to equate it as a negative thing but on closer inspection I guess the key point is that it is ‘in progress’, it’s developing, growing, changing and hopefully improving through time.

I’ll save the navel-gazing about how WiP applies to areas of my life and personality and instead show you the first in a series of sneak peaks into my WiP box. This is a tapestry that’s been gathering dust in the box for a while. I have no pattern so have instead been playing with colours and textures (believe me chennille is not made for canvas work!) and will most likely turn it into a cushion cover or do you have any other ideas for it?

    T’is the season

..to be jolly (apparently!). Unfortunately no one thought to tell the bad luck fairy this and we’ve been hit with a few knocks the past few days.

decorations.jpgStill, I did a rush job on the tree last night and managed to get the majority of these decorations stuffed and tied so got a wee kick of achievement at seeing them there on our new tree.  As with all things it was a case of trial and error and by the time I had learned from my mistakes we were all out of the fabric but we love them and their flaws. I really liked the heart ones and think I’ll be having a bash at bigger ones in the future (lavander filled or embroidered ones I think).  Hmmm, now if only I had time to make them as wedding favours. Mind in overdrive…

    Last days

Handmade Mistletoe by Miss CraftySo it’s the final month of 2008! Already?! What a year! I turned 30 and got engaged, both of which were enough to turn my stressometer up to 10+. I can only imagine how I’ll handle 2009 with the actual wedding and other big changes afoot!

I’ve already started thinking about what my resolutions will be and am sure I’ll have to try and incorporate all the things I didn’t tick off my birthday list in there somewhere. My problem is I’m a girl of great intentions. Plenty of great ideas and big dreams but somewhat lacking in the discipline and effort front.

My other issue has been the Wedding. There’s so much to sort out and decide that all my effort (and money) has gone into trying to get it on track and that makes me a bit sad, as I don’t think since we got engaged I’ve had one minute to be ‘excited’ and instead have just been harassed and stressed out with it all. I feel like all the fun stuff (even fun crafting) has been put on hold till we get back from our honeymoon.

Even Christmas crafting has fallen by the wayside as I need to assemble all our invites over the next few weeks so we can get them in the post in early January. Still, I refuse to let another year go by with my various half-finished Christmas things gathering dust so this week I’m dividing my time between invites and finishing off some mistletoe. Any excuse for extra kissing! :)

    Tickled pink

    Bird Stitch Close up

Well, it seems like sometimes even little ole me can have a decent brainwave! The Glasgow Craft Mafia have kindly taken up my suggestion of a pink party and will be getting their pink on at their social on October 5th (More details here). There’s also plans afoot for something similarly pink and charitable in December with some other crafty folks, so I’ll keep you posted if that comes to fruition.

In the meantime, I’ve started work on the above project which combines birds, my new doodle stitching trend and pink. Triple whammy!
